And unlike other self-emptying robots that require you to empty the dust bin after each run, this one automatically empties into the larger waste container that is above its charging dock.

It also has a number of other features, including intelligent obstacle avoidance that uses cameras in conjunction with processor-powered smarts to identify obstacles. It rarely gets derailed or entrapped during cleaning and is also the most effective at avoiding power cables and other objects I've tested. It is not as accurate in detecting pet waste, or other hazards.

2. Eufy RoboVac Hybrid X8

While Anker-owned Eufy has made its name in budget robot vacuums, it's not yet an all-in-one model which can also mop. That changes with the X8 Hybrid, which has an impressive suite of advanced features and is able to compete with more expensive models.

The main selling point of Eufy's this device is its laser navigation. The previous Eufy devices have constructed a rough map of your home by using infrared sensors and bumping into objects but the X8's laser mapping technology is much more accurate. It also takes a lot less time to construct an accurate picture of your space and stores multiple maps, which is ideal for homes with multiple floors.

The X8 is still a decent vacuum on floors with no dust and can sling debris over its side brushes and into the 400ml dust bin with relative ease. The X8's tyres, despite having a circular shape, are very efficient at grabbing edges and corners. It's not a fantastic cat litter picker, though, with our tests showing it is able to remove around 90 percent of the fur from hard floors.

There's a basic mopping mode that utilizes the same water tank as the vacuuming one. This is ideal for spills that aren't too serious, but you can't control the amount of water it uses. It is effective in removing pet hair. It has a higher pick-up rate than the Roborock S7.

3. Miele RX2

Known for quietly effective home appliances Miele's RX2 robot vacuum is a great choice because of its cleaning power, gorgeous design and great navigation. There are a few niggles in its operation that keep it from being named the top smart robot vacuum.

Similar to the latest models of iRobot, the RX2 has dual-sensor mapping technology that uses an LIDAR sensor to map out a room and two 3D scanning cameras to identify and avoid obstacles (like furniture legs or pet waste) in real-time. Once the room is defined, you can assign virtual no go areas and preferred sections to the robot. You can also begin cleaning manually or change the cleaning mode, see live feeds from the cameras onboard and more on the main screen.

The RX2's sensors are effective, registering furniture and other obstructions in real-time. The suction and sweeping power are top-of-the-line and cleans up surface debris from medium-pile carpeting and embedded dust on floors that are unfinished. However, it's not exactly the most flexible robot available. Like many others it's not a very good climber and has trouble with things like thresholds made of metal transition strips.

One thing we love about the 980 is the fact that it utilizes its iAdapt 2.0 navigation sensors and visual simultaneous localisation and mapping technology (or vSLAM) to memorise the floor plan of your home. It will then use that information to create a consistent and efficient cleaning path for each cycle. The result is cleaner floors and a better robot vacuum than most high-end robots.

Other features include two multi-surface rubber brushes that pick up dirt from carpets and hard floors and a spinning brush that sweeps debris into the bin of the robotic vacuum. The sensor for floor tracking helps it navigate between furniture as well as along edges and steps. Cliff Detect prevents the Roomba from falling. It also automatically returns to the base station for easy charging between sessions. The battery life and bin capacity of the 980 aren't as great as other robot vacuums.
